sense Use Cases

Wearable • Orientation • Haptic • Sonar
  • sense interprets the presence of obstacles above the white cane into tactile feedback felt by the peoples skin as a vibration.
  • sense is a transformation of sonar depth sensing of objects to time variable hapic feedback of around 1-10 m distance to a signal density of 0.28 – 2.8 sec.
  • The distance at normal walking speed is 40% of the longest signal frame and provides enough safety also when sudden obstacles come into the direction of motion, where the reaction time covers 2 shortest signals, which is about ½ second.
  • sense can be worn as wearable with a clip as a headband, on the hand, on the arm or on the clothes (shirt) to scan in the direction of motion and can be used in conjunction with the white cane to better the orientation.
  • The haptic output device is built-in and can also be worn with a supple cable (micro-USB port) at the body (breast, neck, ear ring etc.).
  • The people can use sense for guidance in an short indoor and outdoor environment with a reach less than 10 m.
  • sense provides battery power for 1-2 full day use; micro-USB charging.
  • sense provides a touch interface to adjust the signal characteristics in speed and intensity about ± 50%.

Rem.: The images in this post show a prototype (sense 0.5) that is in use for our internal test. The further final version will be much smaller and with different shape.
